Why the holidays are a good time to look for a new job

The festive season is almost upon us – not a time generally associated with looking for a new job but if you’re on the hunt then it might not be the best idea to take a break from your search. Juggling family and social holiday commitments with job hunting is a challenge but here are four reasons why you should keep your eye on the ball.
1. Companies are hiring
Employers don’t stop needing new employees just because it is holiday time and it could be that with business slower than usual, they actually have more time to concentrate on hiring at this time of year. You wouldn’t want to miss out on that golden opportunity just because your back was turned for a couple of weeks. Keep checking in with your recruitment contacts and scanning job sites because employees who need to fill a position now won’t wait until the festivities are over if the right candidate comes along.
2. There will be less competition
If other potential candidates are taking the holiday season off it means that there will be less competition for positions. You may land an interview that you wouldn’t otherwise have got and stand a better chance of getting the job with a reduced pool of candidates. Sacrificing a bit of family time to further your career over the festive season could mean you end up with the best possible Christmas present – the job of your dreams.
3. New year, new job
What better time to start a new job than the beginning of a new year when you are fired up with optimism and raring to go. A new salary and benefits starting in January is tidy and can have real benefits when it comes to tax planning and budgeting. Who doesn’t like kicking off the year with life in order?
4. You can still take time off
You don’t have to job hunt all day every day over the holiday season. Many companies will be closed for at least Christmas Day and New Year’s Day, possibly longer and there are always weekends. If you do land a new job during the festive season, you’ll almost certainly still get some time off to spend with your loved ones.
As a recruiter, I know that jobs are filled when they need to be. If someone hands in their notice, they usually need replacing straight away and a company will look to interview candidates as soon as possible. When you’re in the market for a new job you need to be ready to move fast, whatever else is going on in your life and whatever the season. So have your CVs at the ready at all times and make sure you take incoming calls and respond quickly to messages.
